Why we built it

A city of joiners.

"In defiance of the multi-decade trend toward isolation — we're betting on Norwalk."

Too few people know about all the amazing things Norwalk has to offer. The Oyster is our way of sharing what we find — because we want more people to see what we see.

Every day we learn about new ways fellow citizens can get involved and foster belonging and connection. Norwalk is a special place, with so much potential to keep growing as a connected, vibrant community of neighbors.

This stands in contrast and defiance to the multi-decade trend of people becoming increasingly isolated from one another. Civic engagement and affiliational life have been on the decline for far too long, with predictable and devastating effects on our health and our social fabric.

That's something we can work to reverse — by getting the word out, and celebrating the good things people are doing to bring people together.

The compendium

The Norwalk City Directory.

To produce a great newsletter, we cast the widest net we can. The Directory is our always-evolving compendium of every group, space, event, and resource we find — a guide to the city, written by hand.

Who we are

Built by people who live here.

Bart Mroz

Bart Mroz

Founder, Agency Focus

Bart is founder of Agency Focus, a fractional growth partner for founder-led agencies. He was previously CEO of SUMO Heavy Industries, a digital commerce consulting firm acquired by ITX Corp in 2023.

Bart and Tony have known each other since 2007, when they were both building coworking communities — in Philadelphia and NYC respectively. They share a long-standing and deep passion for building local community.

Tony Bacigalupo

Tony Bacigalupo

Head of Community, Scalepath

Tony has been building community since 2007, when he led the charge to open Manhattan's first coworking space, New Work City — a social hub for people who'd otherwise be stuck at home.

For the past few years he's been focused on his new hometown of Norwalk, CT — creating the City Directory, hosting Pop-Up City Hall at local fairs, the New in Town Meetup, Bike Parties, and more. He chairs the Health & Happiness Committee on Norwalk's Sustainability Task Force.

Norwalk is his "30-year community project" as he puts down roots with his wife and son.

We envision Norwalk as a model for what a modern city can look like when it embraces our natural desire to feel pride in our home and a deep sense of connection with our neighbors. We want people in other cities to be inspired by how we do things here.

Shuck-yeah fact

Norwalk has been harvesting oysters for over 350 years — once producing nearly a third of all oysters consumed in the United States.
